Whether you have arms that you don’t like the appearance of or you want your arms to be shaped and toned instead of sagging, you may want to consider an arm lift. The procedure is often easy to complete, and you can usually go home the same day depending on the extent of the procedure. When you meet with the doctor, you’ll talk about the reasons you want to have an arm lift performed. You’ll also talk about the benefits that you’ll see from it and what you should do for recovery.
You will receive medication that will put you to sleep so that you’re comfortable during the surgery. You will most likely be put under general anesthesia. Keep in mind that you might be in the recovery room a bit longer so that the team can monitor your vital signs after the surgery.
The type of incision will depend on the amount of excess fat and skin that will be removed. There are also different patterns that the doctor can use during an arm lift, again depending on how much skin is taken off during the surgery. Most incisions are on the inside area of your arm so that they aren’t easily seen when you wear clothes that expose your arms. The incision can sometimes be made on the back of the arm as well. If there isn’t as much fat and skin to remove, then the incision will likely be shorter. Liposuction is sometimes used to remove excess amounts of fat that are in your arm if the doctor can’t remove it all in other methods.
Once the incision is made, the fatty tissue can be removed. Excess skin is also removed before the incision is closed. Supportive tissues can sometimes be reshaped during the surgery to give more definition and shape to your arm. It’s common for both arms to be completed during one operation. The doctor will operate on one arm and then the other. You will usually see results from your arm lift in the days and weeks after the surgery.
