Your eyes are one of the first features people see when they look at you. It makes sense to want smooth, lifted eyelids throughout your life.

At Southwest Michigan Plastic and Hand Surgery, we perform skilled blepharoplasty to enhance the appearance of your eyes. We are located in Portage, MI, and welcome new patients to our practice.

What is blepharoplasty? Here’s what you need to know about aging, eyelid surgery, and recovery.

Why Do My Eyes Droop?

Over the years, the skin on your eyelids is impacted by gravity and other factors. Your eyelid skin is very thin, so it is quick to wrinkle and sag.

This can create a “droopy eyelid” appearance on one or both of your eyes. For some patients, eyelid sagging can get in the way of their eyesight, leading to vision problems and frustration.

Some people have droopy eyelids because of genetics. Maybe you were born with low-hanging eyelids that cover part of your eyes. This can affect patients of all ages.

Drooping, wrinkled, and sagging eyelids can all make you look older and permanently worn out. If you want to regain your youthful eye appearance, blepharoplasty can help.

How Blepharoplasty Works

Blepharoplasty is an eyelid procedure that removes excess skin from one or both eyelids.

Before the procedure, we will evaluate you to determine whether you need upper eyelid surgery, lower eyelid surgery, or double eyelid surgery. It’s common to get blepharoplasty on either your upper or lower eyelids, but in some cases, both eyelids need tightening and refining.

During surgery, we mark the areas around your eyes where we will make tiny incisions. Then, we make the incisions and remove the extra skin that causes your eyelids to sag and droop. We may tighten the existing skin around your eyes to give them a more youthful appearance as well.

Our patients love the enhanced aesthetic of their eyes after their blepharoplasty procedures are complete.

Eyelid Surgery Recovery Process

Blepharoplasty is one of the easiest surgeries to recover from. Since the incisions we make are so small, you likely won’t need much time to heal.

Immediately after the procedure, we give you ice to keep you comfortable. You may also need to use ice packs at home for the first day or two after blepharoplasty.

We recommend sleeping in a sitting-up position in a recliner chair to give your eyelids plenty of blood flow to heal. It should only take a few nights before you can lie down in bed again.

Avoid putting in contacts or other internal eye fixtures for at least one week after your procedure. Your eye area needs to heal before you place anything in your eyes.

We perform follow-up appointments both the day after surgery and seven to ten days after the procedure. This allows us to remove any remaining stitches and make sure that your healing process is going well.

The Benefits of Getting Blepharoplasty

Eyelid surgery can enhance your appearance in numerous ways. Consider the benefits of blepharoplasty when deciding whether to undergo this procedure.

Youthful Eyes

Sagging, wrinkling, and drooping are often associated with aging eyes, and these concerns can prematurely age your appearance. Even if you do not have many other wrinkles and fine lines, your eye area is a focal point on your face.

With blepharoplasty, your eyes can look youthful and bright again. This surgery smooths the skin around your eyes to shave years off your overall appearance.

More Energized Appearance

Without drooping and wrinkled eyelid skin, your eyes should look fresh and awake again.

Drooping eyelids can give you a fatigued look, but eyelid surgery can restore your fully energized appearance. It can make you look more friendly and approachable as well. If you want to make your eyes more inviting and awake, blepharoplasty is the procedure for you.

Reduce Vision Problems

If your sagging eyelids are in the way of your vision, blepharoplasty can resolve the problem. Some insurance companies may cover the cost of your procedure if you need the procedure for vision purposes.

Being able to see clearly again will reduce your frustration in everyday life. This simple procedure can allow you to see more of the world at one time.

Small Incisions

Your eyes are fairly small in proportion to the rest of your body, so the incisions we make for blepharoplasty are nearly invisible. Some patients do not have any visible reminders of their procedures.

Small incisions are also easier to recover from, making this procedure convenient and simple.

Short Recovery Period

Most cosmetic surgeries take at least two months to recover from, but blepharoplasty recovery only lasts for a few weeks in most cases.

There are minimal restrictions after eyelid surgery. You can return to work and other responsibilities very soon after your procedure.

The short recovery period makes this procedure convenient and approachable for most patients. If your life will improve by getting eyelid surgery, it is well worth the investment.

More Control over Facial Expressions

When your eyelids hang down over your eyes, it can be hard to make appropriate facial expressions. Other people may think you look sad, angry, or unfriendly.

Blepharoplasty helps you regain control over how your face looks to others. You can make more dynamic expressions without drooping eyelids getting in the way.
