What’s the Best Age To Get a Mommy Makeover?

Some women may feel ready to get a mommy makeover in their thirties, while others may wait until they are closer to forty or fifty. Are you wondering what’s the best age to get this cosmetic procedure? Today, the experts at Southwest Michigan Plastic and Hand Surgery in Portage, MI will help you decide what’s the best time to get this life-changing procedure.

What’s the Best Age To Get a Mommy Makeover?

Mommy makeovers are becoming increasingly popular, and many women are wondering what’s the best age to get one. There’s strictly no “best” age to get this cosmetic procedure – but the best time to get the procedure depends on your situation and circumstances. If you have finished having children and are looking to restore your pre-pregnancy body, you may be at the right age to get cosmetic surgery. We recommend that you get this procedure anywhere between 30 to 50.

Some factors need to be considered when determining the best age for a mommy makeover, including overall health and fitness level, pregnancy history, and existing medical conditions. We recommend that you carefully assess your situation and schedule a consultation with our team so you can know about the most important factors to consider.

Consider Your Current Health and Fitness

How well have you been taking care of your body? Are you near your pre-pregnancy or ideal weight? If you’re in good health and have been able to maintain a healthy, active lifestyle, then you may be a good candidate for major cosmetic surgery. This procedure is not a weight loss solution, but it can help you achieve an overall more aesthetically pleasing appearance.

Undergoing major surgery requires you to be in good health to achieve the best results and a smooth recovery period. The results of your surgery will also tend to last longer if you can take care of your body and maintain a healthy lifestyle. However, if you’re not in yet in good shape and have a lot of weight to lose after pregnancy, it’s probably not wise to get this cosmetic procedure yet. Cosmetic surgery is not a substitute for a balanced diet and an active lifestyle.

When Did You Last Give Birth?

Another thing to consider is how much time has passed since you had children. If it’s been less than two years since giving birth, your body may not have fully recovered yet and it would be wise to wait a while longer. However, if a few years have passed since you had your last child, you may find that you have dropped excess weight after pregnancy and are ready for procedures like breast augmentation or tummy tucks.

Additionally, you must consider the fact that undergoing major surgery requires you to take a downtime of a few weeks. Can you arrange for help around the house? If you’re still nursing an infant, it may be wise to wait until after you’ve weaned your child before undergoing surgery.

What’s Included in This Procedure?

A mommy makeover involves a combination of cosmetic procedures that are designed to help women who have had children regain their pre-pregnancy bodies. Getting this procedure can be an extremely effective way for women who have had children to improve their appearance and feel more confident about themselves without undergoing multiple downtimes.

During your consultation with our team, we will personalize your treatment plan and recommend the best combination of procedures based on your concerns and goals. The most common procedures included are breast augmentation, breast lift, tummy tuck, and liposuction.

Breast Augmentation

The goal of breast augmentation is to add volume or size to the breasts. During the procedure, breast implants are placed under your existing breast tissue. Breast augmentation can make your breasts look larger, firmer, and perkier.

Breast Lift

A breast lift is a surgical procedure that repositions and reshapes drooping or sagging breasts. During the procedure, small incisions near the areola are made and excess tissues are removed. The remaining breast tissues are then lifted and reshaped to a height that looks natural. The result of a breast lift is perkier, rounder breasts that look more youthful.

Tummy Tuck

During a tummy tuck, excess skin and fat are removed from the abdominal area. The procedure involves making incisions between your bikini line and navel. The skin on your abdomen is lifted so that we can repair the underlying muscles by making permanent sutures. Excess skin is trimmed to eliminate the appearance of an abdominal pouch. The result is a flatter, tighter abdominal area with minimal sagging and loose skin.

Liposuction

Many women find that pregnancy and childbirth have left them with pockets of stubborn fat. As part of a mommy makeover, liposuction can be performed to remove unwanted fat deposits throughout the body. During liposuction, we remove unwanted fat by making very small incisions in your skin. A cannula that suctions fat is then inserted through these incisions. The result is a slimmer, more proportionate body contour.

What Can a Mommy Makeover Do for You?

Regardless of your age, we can help you minimize your post-pregnancy aesthetic concerns such as:

  • Loose, sagging skin
  • Weakened abdominal muscles
  • Sagging breasts,
  • Stubborn pockets of fat

The results of this cosmetic procedure can be life-changing: you can expect to achieve a trimmer, tighter appearance, with more contouring and definition in certain areas. In addition to improving your physical appearance, you may also feel an increase in self-confidence after undergoing this procedure.

Are You an Ideal Candidate for the Procedure?

The best candidates for mommy makeover surgery are women who have had children and are unhappy with the changes to their bodies. These changes can include stretched skin, excess fat, and muscle laxity. Candidates should be in good health and have realistic expectations about the results of surgery.

A mother who feels that her current appearance does not reflect her true self may consider getting cosmetic surgery.  Moms who want to improve the appearance of their post-child bodies may also benefit from cosmetic surgery. We can use surgical techniques to tighten loose skin, reduce fat and repair weakened abdominal muscles, all while restoring a more youthful appearance.

You Are Finished Having Children

Are you still thinking about having kids in the future? If so, you may want to wait a little longer before deciding to get a tummy tuck or liposuction. Women who no longer plan to get pregnant in the future are the ideal candidates for a mommy makeover surgery. The procedure does not affect fertility, but you’ll be able to achieve the best, long-lasting results from the procedure if they do not get pregnant and gain weight in the future.

You Are Bothered by the Changes in Your Body

Pregnancy and childbirth can change women in many ways. But if you want to feel like yourself again by minimizing the unwanted physical changes brought by having children, we can help. Cosmetic surgery is not only about improving your appearance, but also about making you feel confident about yourself.

You Have Realistic Expectations

Anyone who’s considering a cosmetic procedure must have realistic expectations about the results that can be achieved. Before you undergo a tummy tuck, breast lift, or breast augmentation, it’s important to understand that your results will be unique to you. It’s not realistic to expect that surgery can make you look like another person.

During your consultation with our team, we will ask about your concerns, goals, and ideal results. We can then provide you with an estimate of the results that can be achieved after performing a number of surgeries. Our goal is to provide you with natural-looking results that complement your unique anatomy.

Get the Right Cosmetic Procedure for Your Age

While we recommend that you get a mommy makeover anywhere between 30 to 50, keep in mind that there’s no one “right” age to get this cosmetic procedure. The best time and age for you to get this procedure will depend on your current circumstances and goals. You may choose to wait until your children are older, or you may want to undergo surgery sooner so you can enjoy the benefits of having a more youthful appearance before your children reach adulthood.

Every woman’s body changes differently after childbirth. If you’re wondering what procedures are right for you, contact Southwest Michigan Plastic and Hand Surgery in Portage, MI and schedule a consultation with our team. We will listen to your concerns and recommend the best combination of procedures that will make you look and feel your best.

How Long Does Botox Last?

Botox

If you have never tried Botox before, you might be wondering how long the injections last before you need to renew them. Millions of people get this treatment every year, making it the world’s most popular med spa service. Part of the reason people choose this option is its longevity. At Southwest Michigan Plastic and Hand Surgery in Portage, MI, we can answer all of your Botox questions, including how long it lasts.

How Long Does Botox Last?

On average, these injections last between 3-6 months. During that time, you will enjoy a noticeable reduction of your fine lines and wrinkles. The longevity varies from person to person, based on the rate at which your body metabolizes the product. People who repeat the treatment tend to enjoy longer intervals between appointments because the muscles “learn” to stay relaxed.

Why Does This Treatment Last So Long?

How can you get up to six months out of one Botox treatment when so many other anti-aging solutions require daily repetition? The answer is that this treatment is different. It interrupts the aging process going on beneath the skin by tackling its very source: muscle contractions.

The Science of Aging

Today, we understand more about aging than we ever have before. Youthful skin stays taunt and supple because it produces several anti-agers in abundance: collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid. As we get older, our production of these anti-agers lessens, allowing our skin to develop fine lines and wrinkles.

The purpose of collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid is to help the skin maintain its shape despite daily use and environmental exposure. Without an abundance of them, lines and wrinkles occur as a result of our facial movements. When the muscles in the face contract, the skin above creases. As we make the same expressions over and over, fine lines and wrinkles start to appear.

How Botox Works

Getting Botox injections is a way to minimize fine lines and wrinkles even if your skin has already become more prone to aging. Developed decades ago as a way to control eye spasms, this treatment works as a muscle relaxer by using cosmetic-grade botulinum toxin. Soon after, skincare experts realized its potential for addressing fine lines and wrinkles.

When injected into the muscles that cause your wrinkles, botulinum toxin temporarily interrupts the neural signals that instruct them to become tense. The muscles will stay relaxed for as long as the botulinum toxin stays in your system, allowing your skin to look smoother and more youthful. Most skincare experts agree that apart from surgery, these injections are the single most effective way to maintain smooth skin as you get older.

The Longevity of This Treatment

After you receive this treatment, you can expect between 3-6 months of smoother skin. That’s how long it takes most people to metabolize the botulinum toxin. This longevity comes from the fact that the active ingredient is injected beneath the skin, unlike topical solutions that need to be reapplied every day.
It is important to note that while the results last for months, this treatment will not have a permanent impact on your face. That makes it a popular alternative for people who are not quite ready for cosmetic surgery. You can feel free to try it out and see how you like the results you get.

How Can I Get Results That Last Longer?

With this treatment, you can absolutely enjoy significant benefits for as long as you continue to book appointments. When you see the effects begin to recede, simply come back for another round of injections. They are safe to repeat every 4 months, and there is no upper limit to the number of times you can have them done. Many patients book their appointments at regular intervals, making this treatment a routine part of their long-term anti-aging strategy.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Types of Wrinkles Does This Treatment Improve?

These injections are effective against all the most common types of wrinkles. You can use them to lessen:

  • Crows feet
  • Frown Lines
  • Brow lines
  • Chin dimples
  • Parenthesis
  • Lip Lines

When you come in for a consultation, we will take a look at the wrinkles you want to address. We can explain how they will likely look after receiving this treatment, and how many units of botulinum toxin you will need to achieve your desired results. If you are interested in combining the injections with other treatment options, such as dermal fillers, we will customize an anti-aging plan that is designed especially for you.

When Do the Results Start To Show?

Most people notice improvements in their skin within 24-48 hours. The full results develop over approximately two weeks following your appointment.

Do the Results Look Natural?

Yes. Some people worry about having a frozen look following their injections, but we can assure you that your face will stay dynamic and expressive. Our licensed staff is made up of professionals who have ample experience and an expert understanding of facial anatomy. We administer the injections in a tasteful way that only targets the muscles that cause wrinkles.

The fact that millions of people get these injections each year speaks to the natural-looking results they deliver. Even though Botox patients are everywhere, you can’t tell who they are unless they tell you they’ve had the treatment.

How Old Should You Be To Get This Treatment?

When you are deciding whether or not to begin this treatment, the condition of your skin is more important than your age. Everyone’s skin develops wrinkles at a different rate. Factors that cause some people to get wrinkles earlier than others include genetics, sun exposure, environmental pollution, diet, and stress.  The good news is that this treatment will improve your wrinkles regardless of what caused them.

A good time to start this treatment is when you begin to see thin lines on your face. In the beginning stages of aging, these lines might appear more noticeable in certain lighting conditions or on days when you are tired or dehydrated. Untreated, they will deepen into wrinkles. While you can get your first round of injections at any age, many people begin in their 20s or early 30s.

What Is Preventative Botox?

When people use this treatment in a preventative way, they are treating their fine lines early to minimize the severity of the wrinkles that develop later on. The reason this approach works is that by using the product to minimize your muscle contractions before the onset of wrinkles, you don’t give the lines as much of a chance to deepen in the first place.

Does This Treatment Work Better on Some Skin Types?

No! Everyone can benefit from this treatment, regardless of skin type. It doesn’t matter if your skin is dry or oily, and it works on all skin colors.

How Are the Injections Administered?

This treatment is done with a very fine needle after a topical anesthetic has been applied. There are usually only a few injection sites, depending on which area of your face you would like to treat. The process is so gentle that after the treatment, you can resume your daily routine without taking time off work or arranging for another person to drive you home. You heard it right, there is no downtime after your appointment!

How Long Does the Appointment Take?

You will be in and out of the med spa in less than half an hour! Generally, it takes a few moments to check-in and get settled. Afterward, the actual injections are done in about 10 minutes.

How Long Does Voluma Last?

Voluma

If you want to look younger and rejuvenated whilst still looking totally natural, you may be interested in Voluma. This groundbreaking treatment works to smooth and lift the skin, filling out the wrinkles, fine lines, and thin lips that can leave you looking aged and tired. We’re proud to offer this treatment here at Southwest Michigan Plastic and Hand Surgery in Portage, MI. If you’re interested in learning more about this fantastic treatment, read on.

How Long Does Voluma Last?

Incredibly, the effects of Voluma can last for up to two years. The exact length of results will vary depending on the individual and how their body functions. But one thing’s for sure – during this time, you’ll be able to enjoy glowing, smooth skin that has you looking younger and naturally gorgeous. When the results fade, many of our patients come back in to get treatment all over again, since appointments are so quick and easy that they can be booked in for your lunch break!

What Is Voluma?

This groundbreaking treatment is an FDA-approved series of injections made to the face. It’s part of the “dermal filler” family, which means it adds volume and hydration to the face by delivering the body a substance called hyaluronic acid. This lifts your skin, leveling out wrinkles and plumping out sagging and hollow areas. The result is a more youthful-looking appearance that can renew confidence. Patients love that this treatment doesn’t “reconstruct” the face, but rather refreshes and enhances your natural beauty.

What Is Hyaluronic Acid?

Hyaluronic acid, or HA, is a substance that occurs naturally in the body. Its job is to bring moisture to the skin, which keeps it soft. It’s also directly linked to the body’s production of collagen and elastin, proteins that keep the skin supple and lifted. The problem is, as we age, we produce less and less HA, and as such less and less collagen and elastin. This is why the skin becomes more coarse and sagging the older we get.

In this treatment, a synthetic version of HA is injected directly into the skin. Once inside the body, it searches for water molecules and binds with them. Incredibly, HA can carry a thousand times its weight in water, which it then brings to the skin’s surface to immediately replenish it with moisture. The HA then settles into the face, tightening the skin gradually creating a more sculpted look. It commonly takes about two weeks for patients to see optimal results.

So What Should I Expect Out of Treatment?

An Initial Consultation

You’ll first need to come into our gorgeous Portage office for a chat. This will be our opportunity to hear all about your skin concerns and make sure this treatment will work to address them. We’ll also go over any medications you might be on and your medical history. If everything looks good, we’ll design a treatment plan specifically tailored to your face and aesthetic goals. This will include how many injections you’ll need, where they’ll be made, and how much product will be used.

Your Appointment

On the day, you’ll be asked to come in with a clean face so that there’s no risk we’ll contaminate the needle with any makeup or sunscreen. We may first apply a topical numbing agent to the treatment area to ensure you’re comfortable throughout the process. We’ll then follow along with the treatment plan, making careful injections to the areas you’re looking to correct. The entire process only takes about fifteen minutes, then you’re all done!

Where Can This Treatment Be Applied?

This treatment works on all sorts of cosmetic concerns, from fine lines to more severe wrinkles. Some of the most popular areas it’s used on include:

  • Frown lines
  • Smile lines
  • Thin lips
  • Hollow cheeks
  • Sunken temples
  • Marionette lines: the lines that go from the corners of the mouth down to the chin
  • Nasolabial folds: the lines that go from the nostrils to the corners of the mouth
  • Hands

How Much Recovery Time Will I Need After My Treatment?

Get excited, because this treatment doesn’t require any downtime! You’ll be able to immediately get on with your day, even driving yourself to and from your appointment because we don’t use anesthetic. So whether it’s heading back to work or meeting a friend for a coffee, your schedule won’t take a hit. We may recommend a few precautions to take or things to avoid based on your specific needs or medical history, but it will only be for a few days after your session.

What Other Fillers Are Available?

Here at Southwest Michigan Plastic and Hand Surgery, we’re thrilled to offer a range of cosmetic solutions that fight the signs of aging and refresh dull, tired skin. During your consultation, we may discover that Voluma won’t be the most effective treatment to remedy your cosmetic concerns. Instead, we’ll be happy to suggest an alternative treatment that will get the job done, whether that’s another type of injectable or something else entirely.

Alternative Derma Fillers

  • Perlane: This HA injectable is used mainly on the mouth to reduce lines and create fullness in the lips.
  • Prevelle: This injectable combines HA with Lidocaine, which makes injections more gentle. It has a very even texture that makes the results look smooth and consistent.
  • Restylane: A very popular lip filler, it’s also very effective when used on crow’s feet and nasolabial folds.
  • Radiesse: This injectable is made up of a protein called calcium hydroxylapatite, which makes it a stronger filler that can effectively restructure areas of the face. These areas commonly include the cheekbones and nasolabial folds.
  • Juvederm: A more gentle, natural-looking option for candidates who want to treat lines all over the face, this soft gel filler will give you a more subtle, but still stunning, look.

Other Injectables

Sometimes it’s not a loss of HA that’s caused our wrinkles, but rather repeated facial movements that make lines and indents on the skin. If this is the case, dermal fillers won’t do much to remedy it. But neuromodulators like Botox and Dysport will. These incredible injectables target the nerves under the skin’s surface and block their communication with nearby muscles. When this happens, the muscles can’t contract, meaning you can talk and laugh without wrinkles forming! These treatments are particularly effective on frown lines, forehead lines, and crow’s feet.

Facelift

If you’re looking to treat more severe skin sagging, then injectables may not do the trick. A facelift is a surgical procedure that involves removing and pulling back excess skin on the face, notably around the neck and cheeks. The results are incredible, with patients looking years younger and enjoying results that can last for up to a decade. If you have time to take off work and you’re struggling with severe jowls or “turkey neck”, this can be an incredible option.

What Other Factors Cause Wrinkles?

Despite wrinkles and lines being called “the signs of aging”, age is really only one piece of the puzzle. Did you know that things like alcohol consumption, smoking, weight fluctuation, and even air pollution can affect how quickly our skin starts wrinkle sag? Plus, as mentioned above, dynamic wrinkles are caused by making the same expressions over and over. While there are certain lifestyle changes a person can make to minimize the development of wrinkles, it’s great that treatments exist to turn back the clock on them too!

Who Is a Good Candidate for Treatment?

Certain medical conditions and medications may prohibit you from being able to undergo this treatment. Those who are pregnant or breastfeeding will also be ineligible, as will anyone under the age of 18. Beyond this, however, we encourage anyone who’s been feeling self-conscious about aging skin to come in for a consultation. These cosmetic concerns don’t affect one single age, skin tone, or gender, so if you’re noticing your skin start to sag or crease, you might be a great fit for this treatment.

Are You Ready for Rejuvenated, Younger-Looking Skin?

If you want to give your skin a boost of volume and hydration, but still look like yourself, then you might be interested in Voluma. Whether it’s to plump up your lips or turn back the clock on aging skin, this unbeatable injectable can have you feeling gorgeous in just a few minutes. So what are you waiting for? Schedule a consultation with our wonderful team here at Southwest Michigan Plastic and Hand Surgery in Portage, MI, today.

Who Is a Good Candidate for Body Sculpting?

Body Sculpting

If you spend all your time balancing your diet, drinking enough water, and logging hours at the gym but you aren’t getting the body that you want, then it may be time to consider aesthetic treatments. Sometimes, no matter how much effort we put into it, stubborn pockets of unwanted fat can linger on the body. Instead of stressing over your body shape, you may be able to turn to body sculpting treatments at Southwest Michigan Plastic and Hand Surgery in Portage, MI to help you reach your aesthetic goals.

Who Is a Good Candidate for Body Sculpting?

At our clinic, we use the TruSculpt iD system, which uses thermal energy to reduce unwanted fat and tighten skin on virtually every area of the body. This treatment is a great option for people who have mild to moderate unwanted fat and who want to see results quickly. The results of this treatment can last several years – or can even be permanent if you maintain your weight. But who are good candidates for this body sculpting treatment?

You Want To Treat Multiple Areas

For most people, if you’re struggling to get rid of unwanted fat in one area, then you’re likely struggling in other areas of the body, too. The TruSculpt iD treatment is unique because it can be used to treat virtually all areas of the body, from larger areas like the stomach to smaller areas like the neck. Some of the most common treatment areas include:

  • Abdomen
  • Thighs (inner and outer)
  • Knees
  • Buttocks
  • Hips
  • Back
  • Chest (men)
  • Arms
  • Neck

Contrary to popular relief, losing targeted pockets of fat in some areas of the body can be difficult. Everyone has different metabolic responses to weight-loss methods and genetics may be a factor in how easily you can lose unwanted fat. For example, some people can easily reduce belly fat but may struggle with fat on the neck or beneath the chin. Body sculpting treatments can help bridge this gap.

You Want To Reduce Fat

The TruSculpt iD system is incredibly effective. The thermal energy generated with this unique system can reduce about 24% of fat in all treated areas – and that’s like shaving off 1/4 of your unwanted fat in only a single treatment per desired target area. This system is easily one of the most powerful body sculpting treatments currently available, rivaled only by brands like CoolSculpting. If you want to reduce unwanted fat, then this treatment is likely ideal for you.

You Want To Tighten Skin

Unlike some other sculpting treatments, this system can also tighten loose skin on the body. One of the effects of significant weight loss is loose skin on the body, which can take several months or years to become tighter, if ever. However, the thermal energy generated by this treatment actually stimulates collagen and elastin production, which then tightens your skin so your skin is firmer and younger-looking. This means you can tighten skin and reduce unwanted fat at the same time.

You Want To Reduce Cellulite

For some, the goal of using this treatment is to reduce the appearance of cellulite, especially on the thighs. Cellulite is more commonly found in women and does not necessarily indicate that you are overweight; rather, cellulite is caused by underlying fat poking through fibrous bands, which creates the appearance of dimples on the skin. This treatment works by increasing collagen in the skin to thicken the skin and reduce the appearance of cellulite.

You Are Not Overweight

TruSculpt iD is not a weight-loss treatment so it will not help you shed a significant amount of weight. The best candidates for this treatment are those who are not significantly overweight or with a BMI of 30 or greater. You are likely a good candidate if you are within 10 to 20 pounds of your target weight or if you plan to lose additional weight after your treatment.

That said, although this treatment will not help you lose weight, you may see a change in your clothing size after this treatment. This sculpting treatment reduces targeted pockets of fat, which can help slim down your shape and help you reduce your clothing size by at least one to two sizes.

You Are Committed to a Healthy Lifestyle

Good candidates for this treatment are also committed to a healthy lifestyle, which means you are prepared to maintain your results by maintaining your weight. While your weight can normally fluctuate about five to 10 pounds in either direction each month because of water retention, suddenly gaining more than 10 pounds usually means that you are storing more fat from your food intake. By maintaining a healthy weight, you will be able to enjoy your results for a longer time.

You Do Not Have Medical Restrictions

People who are qualified for this treatment must also not have certain medical restrictions. For example, you should not be pregnant, have any active skin infections, and should not have any medical devices such as pacemakers in your body. During your consultation, we will assess your medical information to determine whether you are medically qualified for this treatment.

You Want To Slim Down

People who use this treatment have the general goal of slimming down or achieving a thinner, sleeker appearance. Generally, wanting to appear slimmer is not the same as wanting to lose weight. Those who want to have a slimmer silhouette are usually already near their goal weight, so a sculpting treatment is something that can be used to achieve an aesthetic goal, such as moderately altering the size of the waist.

You Want Fast Results

People who use this treatment also want to enjoy fast results. Most people can see the results of this treatment in as little as one to two treatments, with the full results of this treatment appearing in about 12 weeks. Usually, you will be able to see the results of this treatment about four weeks after your first appointment.

You Do Not Want Surgery

If you’re looking at a body contouring treatment, then you’re likely not interested in having any invasive surgeries. One of the most common plastic surgery techniques to remove unwanted fat is liposuction, but this is an invasive technique that has a longer recovery time and doesn’t always produce natural-looking results. Non-surgical energy-based treatment can produce exceptional results without any invasive techniques, scarring, or other health risks.

You Do Not Want Extensive Downtime

In addition to non-surgical treatments not involving any invasive techniques that can create scarring, energy-based treatments such as this one do not have any downtime. This can be an advantage for people who do not have the time for an extensive recovery period, or those who simply don’t want a disruption in their daily lives.

After this treatment, you can go back to work, resume your normal exercise schedule, and much more. The only thing you will need to do after your treatment protects your skin from direct sunlight and drink plenty of water.

You Want To Feel More Confident

This treatment is also ideal for those who want to feel more confident about their appearance. The inability to get rid of unwanted pockets of fat can be detrimental to your overall feeling of self-confidence, particularly if you are unable to fit in clothes. Some people also use this treatment to feel more confident about important events in their lives, including weddings, work functions, and special vacations.

Feeling more confident has more than just psychological benefits. Many people who feel more confident about their appearance also tend to make better health decisions. Because you will want to continue looking slim, you will be more likely to adopt a better diet and exercise routine so you can maintain your desired results.

Be Proud of Your Body Shape With TruSculpt iD

If you’re struggling to get the body shape you want with traditional diet and exercise, it may be time to explore other options so you can love the way you look. Body sculpting treatments with TruSculpt iD are a good solution for anyone who wants to reduce unwanted fat on virtually all areas of the body. These treatments can be completed in as little as 15 minutes and will produce visible results as early as four weeks after your first treatment. How Does Rhinoplasty Work?

rhinoplasty

Are you unhappy with your nose, or perhaps you experience difficulty breathing? Don’t worry anymore because Rhinoplasty delivers the solution you need. Whether you want reconstructive or cosmetic surgery, getting a nose job gives you a completely different look. No matter what you’re looking for in a new nose, our team at Southwest Michigan Plastic and Hand Surgery in Portage, MI, will give you top-tier care and results.

Rhinoplasty, also called “nose job,” is a standard solution for patients unhappy with their nose’s shape or size. Apart from cosmetic benefits, the procedure has more versatile applications like improving nasal function after an illness or traumatic injury or helping with breathing problems that affect sleep and exercise. Therefore, this surgery aims to revise the nose to suit the patient’s desired functionality and appearance without forgetting skin type and face architecture.

How Does Rhinoplasty Work?

Most patients that get a nose job have their unique reasons. Your specific reason will determine the nose job type you’ll get after an initial consultation with our doctor. It’s vital to note that nose jobs are classified into two: functional nose jobs and cosmetic nose jobs.

1. Functional Nose Jobs

A functional nose job is for those seeking to fix a problem with how their nose works. There are different reasons why a patient will pursue a functional nose job, such as the cartilage septum being deviated or nasal passages being too narrow. Deviated septum usually occurs naturally or as a result of an injury.

Also, patients may seek functional nose jobs due to allergies or sinus infections that cause the turbinates (nasal concha) to become elongated. These shell-shaped structures are made of blood vessels, bone, and other tissues and may become swollen and inhibit airflow. Supposing it turns out to be a chronic problem, a turbinate reduction may help by removing tissue to make more space for airflow.

2. Cosmetic Nose Jobs

Cosmetic nose jobs are for individuals whose noses work just fine but desire to change the shape or size for aesthetic purposes. One main reason for this nose job is an asymmetry of some kind; perhaps your nose size isn’t proportional to your face and throws off your facial symmetry. Maybe you’re not pleased with the size of your nose or the width or the position of your nostrils; fixing a crucial nose area may improve facial symmetry.

Plastic surgeons are skilled in addressing different nose areas at once. There are two practical approaches to nose jobs: the endonasal approach (closed approach) and the external approach (open approach). With the help of a surgeon, you’ll be able to know the best approach for your needs.

I). Endonasal Approach

A closed endonasal approach is perfect for minor changes to a nose. With this approach, all incisions are done inside the nostrils to prevent visible scarring around your nose. Although this approach leaves no visible scarring, it has unique limitations, which you must understand as a patient.

The endonasal approach is excellent for minor, simple fixes since it doesn’t allow the doctor to access the underlying nasal structure fully. Moreover, the skin may not be repositioned fully when the nasal cavities are not attached. However, if you’re only interested in a minor change, this approach is perfect since it doesn’t require extensive repositioning or a full nose view.

II). External Approach

The external approach is mostly suggested for those looking for significant changes to their nose. For an external or open nose job, our surgeon will make a small bridging incision known as a trans-columellar incision that connects the nostrils and allows the nasal skin to be folded upwards, enabling the surgeon to access the underlying structure.

If you need serious changes to your nasal structure or have complicated nasal issues, and an external nose job is a suitable option for you. The best thing is that, when healed, the trans-columellar incision is often invisible.

What To Expect

Before a rhinoplasty surgery, you’ll have to consult with our surgeon to ensure we all are on the same page. Here, you’ll let the doctor know what you’re looking for in a nose job, including what you want to accomplish. Also, the surgeon will examine your medical history and inquire about any medications you take.

The doctor performs a medical exam by closely examining the skin on the inside and outside the nose and letting you know what changes can be made to achieve your desired nose. The doctor will take pictures of your nose from various angles and later use them for reference during the surgery and assessing the results. The surgeon may order a blood test or other blood tests to ensure your body is ready for surgery.

Health Precautions

Patients are advised to avoid painkillers that contain aspirin or ibuprofen for at least two weeks before and after the surgery. Medications with these substances may slow down your body’s blood-clotting process, leading to more bleeding. Being open about the supplements and medications you take will help your doctor advise you on the ones that are safe to continue and those you should avoid using before surgery.

In general, smokers have more difficulty recovering from surgeries, and nose jobs are not an exception. Cigarettes slow down the recovery process since the nicotine constricts your blood vessels, leading to less oxygen and blood circulating and healing the tissues. Smokers are encouraged to stop smoking before and after the surgery to help with the healing process.

The Day of the Procedure

It’s safe for you to get your Rhinoplasty done in a hospital, a doctor’s office, or in an outpatient surgical facility, but the degree of the work will determine the kind of anesthesia that you’ll receive. A pretty simple procedure may only require local anesthesia to the nose to numb your face. The doctor may give you anesthesia via an IV line to make you groggy, but you’ll still be awake,

In other cases, patients are given general anesthesia to make them unconscious during the surgery. Once the anesthesia has taken effect, the surgeon will begin to make incisions inside or between your nostrils to separate your skin from the cartilage and start reshaping underlying structures. Depending on your individual needs, a small amount of cartilage needed for reshaping will be removed from your ear or deep inside your nostrils, but if more is required, you may get a bone graft or implant.

Recovering From a Nose Job

After the surgery, the surgeon may place a plastic or metal splint on your nose to retain the new shape during the recovery period. Also, he will insert splints or nasal packs in the nostrils to support your septum (the piece between your nose). You’ll be under doctor’s observation for several hours to ensure you’re doing well; if that’s the case, you may be able to go home later that day.

You’ll need someone to drive you home since you receive anesthesia during the procedure. Supposing the process is more complicated, you may be required to stay in the hospital for a day or two to help you recover. As you rest and recover, make sure your head is kept high above your chest to help yourself heal more quickly.

Aftercare

You’ll need to get lots of rest after your surgery before you can return to your daily activities. Strenuous activities such as running or those that may expose your nose to water, like swimming, should be avoided for several weeks after the surgery. Avoid blowing your nose and eat soft foods only to avoid excessive chewing.

Do not wear clothes that have to be pulled over your head as you might damage your nose. Also, try to reduce the facial expressions you make that require movement, like smiling and laughing. Therefore, how you take care of your nose after your surgery will determine the results — follow your doctor’s instructions for proper aftercare.

Get Your Desired Nose

Nose jobs are the best remedies to change everything you want about your nose. A nose job will reshape your nose to improve facial symmetry and help with problems affecting your breathing. Thanks to Rhinoplasty, you can get your perfect nose, allowing you to reshape your nasal structure completely.

What Is the Best Age To Get a Breast Reduction?

Breast Reduction

There are several reasons why women may seek a breast reduction, such as to relieve neck, shoulder, and back pain. But even though this procedure is very common, many women who are interested in this treatment have many questions about the surgery and the surgical process. At Southwest Michigan Plastic and Hand Surgery in Portage, MI, we know that patients who have a reliable source of knowledge can make the best decisions about their health and aesthetic goals. Learn more about the most frequently asked questions related to this procedure before you call to schedule your consultation with Dr. Elluru.

What Is the Best Age To Get a Breast Reduction?

One of the most commonly-asked questions is about the best age to have a breast reduction. The truth is, as long as the patient desires a breast reduction, there is no “best” age for this procedure. There are several stages in life where a woman may want or need a reduction procedure. Ultimately, the best way to determine if you are at the right age to have this procedure is to attend a consultation with a plastic surgeon. That said, some of the most common age groups for this procedure include:

Under 18

During puberty, secondary sex characteristics such as the breasts begin to develop, sometimes as early as age 11 or 12. Over the next several years, the size of the mammary tissue will grow in relation to genetics, weight gain, and hormones. However, many women younger than 18 struggle with overly large breasts and may desire a reduction before they become adults. Some girls as young as 15 or 16 may petition parents for permission to have this procedure.

However, while some surgeons may perform this procedure for girls younger than 18, most surgeons will not because the body is still developing. Additionally, because parental consent is necessary for any plastic surgery on a patient who is not a legal adult, the surgeon, patient, and parents will need to work together to determine whether or not surgery is a good idea. Many girls who want early reduction surgery will be encouraged to wait until they are at least 18.

Young Women

Young women aged between 18 and 30 are one of the biggest groups to seek a reduction procedure or other breast augmentation procedures for that matter. By the time women are in their 20s, the overall shape of their body and the development of their breasts will be complete, so unless there is a drastic change in body weight, the size of the breasts is likely to be static. For some, this is an ideal age to have this surgery.

Post-Breastfeeding

Pregnancy can drastically change the shape of a woman’s body, particularly her breasts. After breastfeeding, some women have breasts that are still enlarged with excess fat from the pregnancy. Many women like to have a reduction surgery after they have finished breastfeeding to restore the shape of the body to a pre-pregnancy form. That said, if you plan to have more children in the near future, it may make sense to postpone your procedure.

Mature Women

Women over the age of 40 also seek this procedure to refine the shape of their bodies. Many women experience changes in their body proportions related to aging, such as loss of volume in some areas of the body and gaining volume from fat in other areas. A reduction may be a good option to reduce the weight of the breasts, particularly for women who want to correct new body proportions.

Other Frequently Asked Questions

1. Why Do Women Want Breast Reductions?

Women of all ages seek a reduction procedure for several reasons. For example, some women site shoulder, neck, and back pain as being a primary motivator for having this procedure. Overly-large breasts can place stress on the spine and the muscles of the back, which can cause physical discomfort over time.

Other women may want to correct the size of their breasts for the sake of convenience. Large breasts can feel cumbersome during exercise or basic household chores, and it may be difficult to find bras that fit correctly. By reducing the size of the breasts, women will be able to have an easier time in multiple areas of life.

The Importance of Confidence

Beyond all the practical reasons women may seek to have a reduction surgery, perhaps the most prominent motivation for this procedure is to improve self-confidence. A poor self-image related to the body can have long-lasting psychological impacts. Women who feel self-conscious about the size of their breasts for any reason may not feel comfortable in public wearing certain clothes and may even take great steps to not draw attention to themselves.

By reducing the size of the breasts, women may begin to feel more confident about themselves. With more confidence may come more happiness or even a new willingness to make healthier lifestyle choices. The importance of confidence is tied to having a positive sense of well-being, so there may be no greater reason to have this procedure than wanting to feel better about yourself.

2. Are There Signs You May Need a Reduction?

Although the decision to have reduction surgery will depend on your aesthetic goals, some signs may indicate a reduction will be a good idea for your health. For example, if you have chronic pain in the back, neck, or shoulder that requires pain medication, patches, or other at-home therapies for pain relief, you may want to consider a reduction.

Women may also want to consider a reduction procedure if they frequently have grooves from bra straps on the neck and shoulders. Rashes and skin irritation beneath the breasts are another common sign that your breasts may be too large. Difficulty sleeping, exercising, or performing daily activities can also be signs that a reduction is in your best interest.

3. Can You Breastfeed After Reduction Surgery?

Some women who have not had children or who plan to have more children in the future may worry about their ability to breastfeed after a breast procedure. Like most other breast procedures, there should be no issue with breastfeeding in the future. In fact, the techniques used for a reduction are the most friendly to future breastfeeding. Please be sure to bring up your concerns about future breastfeeding during your consultation with Dr. Elluru.

4. Is Anesthesia Required?

Yes, general anesthesia is required for this procedure. It will take a few hours to complete your reduction surgery, so you will be administered anesthesia by a certified anesthesiologist so you will be unconscious for the duration of the procedure. After your surgery is complete, you may feel groggy as the anesthesia wears off. As long as you are generally healthy and pass certain labs and exams, then you should be approved for surgery using general anesthesia.

5. How Should You Prepare for Surgery?

There are a few things you will need to do before you can have breast reduction surgery. For example, you may need to complete certain labs, exams, or medical evaluations to determine whether or not you are healthy enough for the procedure. You may need to adjust the dosage of certain medications or temporarily discontinue blood-thinning medications one to two weeks before your surgery. It’s also recommended that you complete a mammogram before your procedure to establish a baseline for your current breast tissue.

6. What Should You Do After Surgery?

Your recovery period will take about two to six weeks before you can resume normal activities, such as exercise. Most women will be able to resume light activity within one week of their procedure, meaning they can return to work after one to two weeks. During your recovery period, you will be required to wear a special bra for 24 hours a day for four weeks to encourage good healing. When you have fully recovered from the procedure, it’s recommended to have a mammogram to assess your breast tissue and establish a new baseline.

Feel More Confident Today

Large breasts can be difficult to cope with, especially when it becomes difficult to wear clothes or perform certain activities. Some women with overly large breasts may even experience chronic neck, shoulder, and back pain. While there is no “best” age to have reduction surgery, most surgeons require their patients to be at least 18 years or older. Does Juvederm Treatment Use an Anesthetic?

As we age, it’s normal for our skin to lose its volume and perkiness, leading to wrinkles, hollow cheeks, and thin lips. While there’s nothing wrong with getting older, it can be hard to watch your face change and the person in the mirror grow less familiar. But with Juvederm, you can refresh your face, restoring volume so you feel younger and more yourself. Here at Southwest Michigan Plastic and Hand Surgery in Portage, MI, we can help you feel rejuvenated and gorgeous with just a few simple injections.

Does Juvederm Treatment Use an Anesthetic?

Because Juvederm is a minimally invasive treatment, patients won’t need to use an anesthetic. A topical numbing cream may be applied to the treatment areas before the injections are performed, but this is only to stop patients from experiencing any discomfort from the needle. For this reason, patients don’t need to worry about any reactions the body might have to the anesthetic, and can carry on with their day immediately after their session – even driving themselves to and from the appointment if they like!

But that’s just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to all the benefits of this FDA-approved anti-wrinkle treatment. To learn more about Juvederm, read on.

What Exactly Is Juvederm?

This simple injectable utilizes the power of hyaluronic acid, or HA, to hydrate the body and revitalize the skin. HA is found naturally in the body, but our production of it slows as we age. Without it, our skin stops receiving moisture, as well as healthy nutrients like elastin and collagen, which can result in its sagging, wrinkling, and becoming more coarse. But by giving the body a new, synthetic supply of HA, we can combat these issues!

When injected into the skin, the product gets to work restoring volume, moisture, and suppleness. Patients love that results develop quickly after simple sessions that are short enough to be attended on a lunch break, and make them look younger, healthier, and more refreshed, whilst still looking natural and like themselves.

So Aging Is the Cause of My Wrinkles?

Not necessarily. Things like sun damage, heavy alcohol or tobacco consumption, genetics, a poor diet, or even overactive facial muscles can be the cause of lines and folds on the face and neck, many of them contributing to a loss of HA in the same way aging does. Whatever the cause, if your skin is sagging and could benefit from a boost of hydration, this treatment may be right for you.

How Does This Treatment Work?

During your session, a series of injections are made into your treatment areas using a very fine needle. The product injected, containing HA, gets to work binding to water it finds in the body. Amazingly, HA can absorb up to one thousand times its weight in water! Once it’s done that, it brings that moisture to the skin, which will then become more plump and voluminous. In the weeks after your session, the body absorbs the HA and your face settles into its fresh structure, with gorgeous, natural results developing over time.

Because HA is naturally occurring in the body, the risk of a patient rejecting the product is incredibly low, and there’s rarely any kind of allergic reaction to it. Patients also love that the synthetic version of HA used in this treatment is a gel form rather than a liquid, so it better holds shape. The treatment also stimulates the body to produce more HA and collagen on its own, so as well as a cosmetic treatment, it works as a kind of kick-start for the body to rejuvenate itself!

Where Can This Treatment Be Applied?

This treatment can be used to remedy several skin concerns, including:

  • Frown lines
  • Crow’s feet
  • Nasolabial folds (lines that run from the nose to the corners of the mouth)
  • Depressed/hollow cheeks
  • Sunken eyes
  • Sunken temples
  • Marionette lines (wrinkles that go from the corners of the mouth down the chin)
  • The lips, to act as a lip filler and increase volume

What Will My Treatment Experience Be Like?

Before Your Treatment

The first step will be to come in for a consultation with a member of our expert team. This will be your chance to talk us through your cosmetic concerns, including what particular areas you’re hoping to treat. We’ll make sure that you’re a suitable candidate for this treatment, going over your medical history and any medications you might be on. We’ll also make sure this treatment is going to be the best option to treat your concerns.

If everything looks good, we’ll design a treatment plan tailored to you specifically, including how many injections to make, how much product will be used, and what type of Juvederm will be best effective for you; there are a few types that specialize in treating different concerns. Usually, we use about one to two vials of product per session. We likely won’t ask you to do anything to prepare for your session, other than coming in with a clean, makeup-free face.

On the Day

Treatment is performed in-house at our gorgeous Portage office. After applying the numbing cream, injections will be made into the targeted areas, sending the HA-fuelled product into your body. The length of your session will depend on how many areas you’re treating, but generally, they take no longer than 45 minutes. Most of our patients report feeling very little pain during the treatment.

After Your Treatment

Patients love that there’s no downtime following this treatment. This is in contrast to many surgical cosmetic procedures that require a week of bed rest and time off work afterward. You’ll be able to carry on with your life immediately, returning to work or running errands. We may suggest a few steps to keep your skin as healthy as possible, such as avoiding harsh sunlight and strenuous exercise.

How Long Before I See Results?

Because moisture is immediately brought to your skin by HA, you may notice some suppleness and new volume right away. As the body absorbs the product and it settles in, these results develop. Many of our patients achieve their desired results after around two weeks, when treated areas are plump, lifted, and shapely. The exact time will, of course, vary depending on the individual.

How Long Will My Results Last?

Juvederm is, amazingly, the longest-lasting FDA-approved filler on the market, with patients often seeing incredible 12-month longevity on their results. The timeline varies depending on the area that’s been treated, the way the body functions, and in particular, the type of product we decide to use during your session, as they vary in thickness. For example, one of Juvederm’s most popular products, Voluma, can last an astonishing two years.

After this time, you can easily book another session if you want to achieve the same look all over again. Some of our patients even come in for mini touch-up sessions between their main sessions!

Am I a Good Candidate for This Treatment?

If you’re over the age of 18 and have noticed wrinkles, fine lines, or hollow areas appearing on your face and neck, you may be an ideal candidate for this treatment. Although many of our patients who seek out this treatment are in their 40s and 50s, we don’t suggest one specific age group is more suited to this treatment than another, understanding that sagging skin and a loss of HA can occur in anyone at any time.

Certain medications may make you ineligible for treatment, as will pregnancy and breastfeeding. If, during your consultation, we discover that your wrinkles are dynamic – caused by overactive facial movements, such as repeatedly frowning or smiling – we may instead suggest Botox. Botox is also an injectable, but targets the nerves under the skin rather than the skin itself, relaxing the muscles and stopping the skin from creasing and folding while it’s moving. The result is smoother, wrinkle-free skin that looks gorgeous and keeps Botox one of the most popular cosmetic treatments of all time.

Schedule a Consultation Today

It can be confronting to watch your face age and change until you no longer recognize the person looking back at you in the mirror. With Juvederm, you can feel yourself again, looking gorgeous and more youthful after a simple, quick session. And our team is ready to help! Laser Hair Removal: How Long Do Treatments Take?

Laser Hair Removal

We humans have hair all over our bodies. But unwanted body hair may leave you feeling unhappy with your appearance. At Southwest Michigan Plastic and Hand Surgery in Portage, MI, our laser hair removal treatments can give you the lasting results you want.

Laser Hair Removal: How Long Do Treatments Take?

Unwanted body hair can cause a lot of anxiety about your appearance. You may feel uncomfortable about your body when you’re in certain situations, or perhaps you can’t wear the clothes you want because you’re too self-conscious about your unwanted body hair. Whatever the reason, it can make a significant impact on your life.

Laser hair removal is a fantastic way to get rid of unwanted body hair, leaving you with smooth and hairless skin that you can feel confident in. You will most likely require several sessions to see the results you’re looking for, and each treatment session is generally very fast. Depending on the size of the area you’re treating, your session may take anywhere between a few minutes to an hour.

What Is Laser Hair Removal?

The word “laser” may look a little intimidating at first. But don’t worry—this is an FDA-approved method of hair removal that is safe and extremely effective. It uses a laser to target the unwanted hairs on your body without damaging the skin.

If you’re thinking about getting this hair removal treatment, then the most important thing is to find a reputable clinic like ours where you will be safe and get the long-lasting results you’re looking for.

How Does the Laser Work?

The laser used for this hair removal method is color-sensitive. That means that it’s attracted to darker pigmentation. When it’s used on your unwanted hairs, the laser avoids the lighter color of your skin and instead focuses on the darker pigmentation of your hair.

As the light reaches your hair, that light is converted into heat. The laser targets the root of your hair, warming it up and damaging the follicle. After you leave your sessions, you’ll notice your hair beginning to fall out. After a few weeks, the follicle will regrow its hair. However, after several sessions, your hair follicles will be unable to produce new hairs.

What Areas Can Be Treated?

Essentially, any area where you have hair can be treated with this hair removal method. Some of the most common places where people have hair removed include:
•    Arms
•    Legs
•    Upper lip
•    Chin
•    Bikini line
•    Back
•    Underarms
•    Neck
•    Shoulders

What Is Getting Treatment Like?

Want to know what you can expect from your treatment process? At our clinic, we will do everything we can to make sure that your experience is safe, comfortable, and that you get the results you want.

During your initial consultation, we’ll discuss what areas you’d like to target with your treatment. We’ll also talk about how you should prepare for your sessions.

Preparing for Your Appointment

This method of hair removal is non-invasive, and there is little you’ll need to do beforehand to prepare. That said, there are still a few things you’ll need to be aware of before your appointment comes if you want it to be as safe and effective as possible.

Remember that this treatment should not be performed on tanned skin. Avoid spending time in direct sunlight, and don’t go to the tanning salon. This treatment is best performed on shaved hair, so shaving before your appointment will help make the treatment more effective. However, you should avoid anything that removes the root of the hair, like plucking or waxing, since the laser targets the root.

Your Appointment

When you arrive at our clinic, we will be happy to welcome you to our safe and comfortable environment. Before we begin applying the laser to your desired areas, we’ll carefully clean your skin. We may also apply a small amount of topical numbing cream to the targeted areas.

Once your skin is ready, we’ll start using the laser. The treatment process should be painless, and you might feel a slight snapping sensation. If you feel any pain or discomfort, don’t hesitate to notify us right away. Because this is non-invasive, you’ll be able to leave the clinic as soon as your appointment is complete.

Recovery

There is very little recovery time necessary after your treatment. However, you should be aware that your skin will be more sensitive and therefore there are some things you’ll need to be mindful of in the days following your appointment.

Continue to avoid spending time in direct sunlight and don’t go to your local tanning salon for the next few days. You should also make sure to apply sunscreen with at least 30 SPF every few hours to keep your skin protected.

How Many Sessions Are Needed?

This is a highly effective and long-lasting way of getting rid of your unwanted body hair. But to see the full results you’re looking for, you’ll likely need several sessions.

The specific number of sessions you’ll need will depend on a few factors. But most people need somewhere between 6 to 8 sessions spaced several weeks apart according to their hair growth cycle. You may need a few more or a few less depending on the following factors.

The Results You Want

One of the main things that goes into determining how many sessions you’ll need is the results you’re looking for specifically. What does that mean, exactly? Well, not everyone seeking out this hair removal method is looking to get rid of hair entirely.

Some people simply want to thin the hair out on a certain area of their bodies. One great example is a man looking to thin out his facial hair to make shaving more manageable while still keeping the ability to grow a beard. This man will require fewer sessions than someone looking to completely remove arm hair, for example.

Your Hair Type

Another thing that plays a huge role in how many treatment sessions you’ll need is your hair type. The laser is attracted to darker pigmentation, so if you have darker hair your treatments will be more effective than on someone with lighter hair, and you may require fewer.

However, if you have especially thick hair, then it’s likely that you’ll need more sessions to completely get rid of hair than someone with finer hair.

Your Targeted Areas

Everyone has a different hair type. But the hair types on different parts of your body will differ from each other too. So, for example, a woman looking to remove hair on her upper lip only will probably need fewer sessions total than someone trying to get rid of leg hair.

The size of the area itself will determine how long each individual session will take. Because it’s a small area, removing your upper lip hair could take just a few minutes while targeting a larger part of the body could take up to an hour.

Benefits of Laser Hair Removal

You know how this hair removal works now, but what are the benefits of getting it?

Avoid Irritation

There are lots of hair removal methods like shaving, waxing, or plucking. But if you’ve ever had razor burn, then you know how uncomfortable shaving can be.

Waxing and plucking can have their own issues if they’re not done correctly. Going with this hair removal method instead will help you avoid skin irritation associated with other methods of hair removal.

Save Time

Shaving or waxing may feel quick. After all, all you need is a few minutes in the shower to shave your legs, right? Well, think about how often you need to shave your legs or other areas of your body. All of that time adds up!

Opting to go with this hair removal method instead will provide you with long-lasting results. And you won’t need to worry about spending time shaving or lengthy waxing appointments.

Gain Confidence

One of the best things about this hair removal method is how much more confident you’ll feel. Unwanted body hair can make you feel very self-conscious about your appearance. The lasting results you get from this hair removal method will help you feel confident and happy about your appearance.

At our clinic, we’ll be more than happy to help you get the lasting results you want from your laser hair removal treatment. To make an appointment, get in touch with us at Southwest Michigan Plastic and Hand Surgery in Portage, MI.

How Is Dysport Treatment Performed?

Wrinkles are one of the most common signs of aging. They are also one of the most undesirable. At Southwest Michigan Plastic and Hand Surgery in Portage, MI, our Dysport injections could be the solution to wrinkles that you’ve been waiting for.

How Is Dysport Treatment Performed?

Are you looking for ways to maintain a youthful appearance? An injectable could be the right method for you. Injectables offer non-invasive solutions for many of the most undesirable signs of aging. They can be effective for treating a variety of wrinkles around the face and neck area.

Dysport is a fantastic injectable that is derived from the same source as Botox. When you receive this treatment, a fine, precise needle will be used to apply the product. This will help your skin look fuller, which in turn makes you look younger and healthier.

What Is Dysport?

This treatment comes from the same bacterium as Botox. This bacterium is called Clostridium botulinum, and it is used to form a neurotoxin called botulinum toxin type A. The words “Bacterium” and “neurotoxin” can sound scary, but this is a completely safe, FDA-approved method of treating issues like fine lines and wrinkles.

The bacterium used to make products like this and Botox can be found in a variety of places. It appears naturally in forests, plants, animals, and different soils.

How Does It Work?

Your brain sends certain signals called neurotransmitters to your muscles. These neurotransmitters tell your muscles to do a variety of things, including tensing and contracting. Unfortunately, this tension often results in the wrinkling of the skin above the muscle.

If you are getting an injectable like this, then the neuromodulator that is being injected into the muscle stops the signal from your brain from reaching that specific muscle. The enzyme contained within the treatment binds to the proteins that are used to send the signals to your nerves, preventing them from traveling to your muscle. That forces the muscle to relax, which will smooth out those fine lines and wrinkles appearing on the skin.

Why Do Wrinkles Appear?

Wrinkles are an almost inevitable part of life. As we get older, it’s entirely natural for wrinkles to show up. They’re one of the biggest signs of aging. But why do wrinkles show up in the first place? There are a few factors that can contribute to the appearance and severity of wrinkles. The first is that as you age, the amount of collagen and elastin in your skin begins to get lower. These proteins are what allow your skin to maintain its elasticity and structure, so their reduction results in sagging, wrinkled skin.

This combined with other elements can result in wrinkles showing up. Repeated facial movements make your skin crease, and since your skin creases in the same way, eventually, they will begin to stick. One of the other factors you need to consider when it comes to the formation of wrinkles is the sun. The sun’s UV rays penetrate your skin and affect the amount of collagen and elastin present, which, of course, will result in wrinkles.

What Does Dysport Treat?

The main use of this treatment is to reduce or even eliminate the appearance of frown lines. These are the lines that appear in between your brows and are a result of frowning. They can also be called “11 lines,” because they often appear as two parallel lines.

This is an extremely effective treatment method if you are looking to get rid of your frown lines for a more relaxed, happier appearance. But frown lines aren’t the only type of wrinkle that this injectable can treat. You’ll find that it is effective at achieving a variety of results.

Crow’s Feet

While the injectable’s primary purpose is treating frown lines, it’s also a great treatment for those who are looking to get rid of their crow’s feet. These are the wrinkles that appear around the corners of your eyes. They are formed by frequent squinting.

When you receive this injectable for your crow’s feet, you’ll find that the areas around your eyes are smoothed out for a younger, natural look.

Forehead Wrinkles

Frown lines aren’t the only wrinkles that appear on and around your forehead. Raising your brow frequently can result in horizontal lines across your forehead, which can make you look concerned or surprised.

This injectable can help to reduce the appearance of these types of wrinkles, offering you a more relaxed and happier appearance overall.

What Are the Benefits?

If you’re looking for a safe and effective way to get rid of unwanted wrinkles around your forehead and eye areas, then this treatment method is a fantastic option. There is a myriad of benefits that come with getting an injectable like this one.

It Looks Natural

One of the major benefits of going with this injectable is how natural it looks. There are many different injectables available, but not all of them offer particularly natural-looking results. If you want to get the youthful appearance you’ve been dreaming of without having to field those awkward “Did you get work done?” questions, then this could be the perfect treatment for you.

This is because this injectable has a thinner consistency than its counterpart Botox. Dysport can spread much more evenly under the skin, offering you more natural, subtle results that won’t beg any dreaded questions from friends and family.

It’s Fast

There are plenty of treatment options available for reducing the appearance of wrinkles, including surgical options. But one of the major drawbacks of these procedures is that they can take a long time. You’ll spend hours under the knife, and you’ll also need to account for the recovery time that needs to come afterward.

You don’t need to worry about that when you get this injectable. The treatment itself is, generally, very fast and shouldn’t take much longer than around half an hour. You also won’t need to worry about any significant recovery time. You’ll need to be careful to avoid certain things, but there won’t be a weeks-long healing period afterward.

You’ll Get Results Quickly

Some treatment options for getting rid of wrinkles can take weeks or even months to get you the results you want. But when you get an injectable like this one, your results will be almost immediate.

You’ll see a change in your appearance within a day of receiving your treatment. Over the next few weeks, you’ll begin to see even more significant results. This makes it a fantastic option for those who are looking to get results fast.

You’ll Look Younger

Because wrinkles are such a prominent sign of aging, getting rid of them will help you look and feel younger. Wrinkles may be natural, but that doesn’t mean you have to put up with them.

An injectable like this will help smooth out wrinkles and fine lines, which will provide you with a much younger, healthier appearance.

It Lasts a Long Time

Injectables offer temporary solutions for wrinkles, but temporary doesn’t mean short-lived. When you receive this injectable, you can expect to maintain your results for a long time. You’ll need to get more treatments, but you can go a relatively long time in between them.

Most people can go 3 to 4 months between treatment sessions. The more injections you have, the longer you’ll likely be able to wait between them.

It Can Be a Good Preventative Measure

Wrinkles may begin to appear on your body sooner than you might be expecting. This is especially true for your face since the skin here is much thinner than it is on the rest of your body. Depending on a variety of factors, most people tend to see wrinkles beginning to form in their late 20s to 30s.

This injectable can help get rid of wrinkles that are already appearing on your face. But if you want to stop them from appearing in the first place, then Dysport can do that too.

What Happens at My Appointment?

If you are thinking of getting this injectable, then the first thing that will happen is we’ll consult with you about your expectations and your desired results. This will help us determine how to proceed with the treatment, and make sure that the treatment plan we come up with is right for you. Once this has been discussed, we’ll get you ready to receive your injection.

Before injecting the product, we will thoroughly clean the targeted areas to remove any grime or buildup on the skin. Then, a very fine and precise needle will be used to inject the Dysport. Afterward, a cold compress will be applied to prevent swelling and redness. Any swelling that does come up will fade quickly, and you’ll be able to leave the clinic soon after the injection is done.

What Do I Do After?

One of the major benefits of injectables is that they require very little recovery time once the treatment is complete. However, there are still some things you should be aware of if you want to make sure that the injectable can give you the results you want.

For about 4 hours after the treatment, you will need to avoid lying down to prevent the injectable from spreading away from the targeted areas. You should also take care to avoid strenuous activity, heat, and sunlight for the first few days after your treatment.

Who Will It Work for?

There are very few people for whom this treatment won’t work. Most people can receive this injectable, but an allergy test may need to be done before the treatment if you have shown sensitivities to certain things in the past. Women who are pregnant or nursing should avoid getting injectables, and those with skin infections on or around the targeted areas are also not recommended to receive them.

This is a great option for people looking to get rid of any wrinkles that have already appeared on the forehead area. It also works for candidates who are looking to prevent them from appearing at all. When you visit our clinic, we will make sure that this treatment works for you.

Look and Feel Younger

Dysport is a fantastic way to get the youthful, healthy-looking skin you want in a way that’s subtle and safe. You’ll erase the appearance of unwanted frown lines as well as other types of wrinkles around the forehead and eyes. What Can You Expect From a Tummy Tuck?

Tummy Tuck

It’s not easy to lose weight. It’s even harder to maintain weight. Unfortunately, even if you’re at an ideal weight, you can still have stubborn pockets of fat that affect your contours. Luckily, at Southwest Michigan Plastic and Hand Surgery in Portage, MI, we offer abdominoplasty, also known as a tummy tuck, to help our clients achieve their desired contours. Keep reading to find out what you can expect from the procedure.

What Can You Expect From a Tummy Tuck?

There are three primary things you can expect from a tummy tuck:

  • The removal of excess skin
  • The elimination of a protruding lower abdomen
  • The tightening of loose skin and muscles

Additionally, a small amount of excess fat is excised during this Tummy Tuck procedure. However, since it is not a fat removal procedure, you should only expect minimal localized fat loss. If a significant amount of fat loss is required for you to achieve your ideal contours, you will need to combine this procedure with liposuction.

Post-Pregnancy

Your body changes after you deliver a baby. One of the most common visible changes to a new mother’s body is a more prominent abdomen. As the fetus grows in the womb, the abdominal skin is rapidly and significantly stretched. This takes an incredible toll on the proteins in the skin that keep it elastic, so your skin may not firm up after you give birth and lose your baby weight.

Regardless of your weight before, during or after pregnancy, there is a good chance your lower abdomen will protrude. This is sometimes called a pregnancy pouch. Note, pregnancy doesn’t just stretch your skin. The growing fetus also stretches the abdominal walls. Once the baby has been delivered, a bulge can occur in the soft tissues surrounding the abdominal muscles, leading to lower back pain and uncomfortable bloating.

Weight Loss

Weight loss, like pregnancy, can leave you with excess skin. While pregnancy takes a toll on skin elasticity for under a year, excess weight can take a toll on skin elasticity for years. The effect excess fat has on your skin’s supportive structures is a lot like stretching a rubber band to its limit. If the weight loss is substantial enough, it may be impossible to tighten sagging skin.

If you lost a lot of weight but you’re young and otherwise healthy, it may take up to 18 months for your skin to tighten. Additionally, a successful weight loss journey may leave behind a stomach that protrudes noticeably. A number of factors have the potential to cause the storage of abdominal fat, including genetics, stress, diet, and lifestyle.

What To Expect Throughout the Process

As noted above, the results you can expect from abdominoplasty include the elimination of excess skin and fat.  Additionally, the abdominal walls are supported and, sometimes, repaired.  The bottom line is you can expect a significantly improved appearance after the procedure. Here’s a closer look at what you can expect in the earlier stages of the process:

An Initial Consultation

Before your procedure, we will review your health history and current health thoroughly. We will also ensure this procedure will help you achieve your goals by discussing your cosmetic and medical goals. At this point in the process, it is imperative we know about your:

  • Previous procedures
  • Routines and lifestyle choices
  • Allergies
  • Current pharmaceuticals and dietary supplements

We will also conduct a physical examination of the area, measuring the circumference of your waist and body fat distribution. Additionally, we will photograph your abdominal region. Finally, we will tailor a treatment plan to help you achieve all of your goals.

The Procedure

Depending on the extent of the goals you are trying to achieve, your procedure may take anywhere from two to four hours. It is an outpatient procedure, so you’ll be able to return home after your procedure is over. In fact, you don’t even need to go to a hospital for this procedure to be performed.

The first step in the procedure process is administering general anesthesia. Once your abdominal region is sanitized and you are asleep and numb, a horizontal incision will be made between your bikini line and navel. How large the incision will be depends on the amount of excess skin you have. This will be discussed in further detail during your initial consultation.

Abdominal Walls

Once the incision is made, your abdominal skin will be lifted. This gives us access to the abdominal muscles beneath the skin. If necessary, these muscles will be repaired. To understand the medical importance of abdominoplasty, you should know your abdominal walls are made up of eight muscles. Two sets of four muscles are horizontally symmetrical. Fascia is the connective tissue that surrounds your abdominal muscles and keeps them connected to each other.

While the abdominal muscles are elastic, the fascia that holds them together is inelastic. For this reason, when your stomach region expands due to pregnancy or excess weight storage, your abdominal region loosens. The fascia cannot recover from this. In severe cases, a protruding belly results from this. Again, your fascia will not “bounce back.” Even if you maintain a lower weight through diet and exercise, only abdominoplasty can restore your fascia and abdominal muscles.

How the Muscles Are Improved

Permanent sutures are used to reverse muscle separation resulting from pulled fascia. We stitch these sutures vertically along the muscle edges, buried deep within the tissue never to be seen or felt.

You’ll enjoy tighter, stronger abdominal muscles, but you will basically forget the sutures are still inside your abdomen. Horizontal sutures may also be stitched into your muscles if there is extreme muscle laxity. These so-called corset sutures help you look sleeker and stronger.

Excess Skin

After we have repaired your abdominal muscles, we will put your abdominal skin back in place. Then, we will trim any excess skin that is causing an abdominal pouch or extends too far.

We will make a second incision around the navel if you have excess upper abdominal skin. Once all of your excess skin is removed, the healthy, taut skin is sutured closed. We are also more than happy to adjust the position of your navel if that will help you achieve your cosmetic goals.

The Recovery Process

Everyone heals in a unique manner, so we can’t tell you exactly what you should expect during your recovery process. However, you will definitely need someone to drive you home after your procedure.

You should not drive within 24 hours of your procedure because general anesthesia can cause drowsiness and slow reflexes. Additionally, it is strongly advisable to have someone stay with you for the first 24 hours post-op so you can focus all of your attention on resting.

Pharmaceuticals

You may benefit from taking prescription analgesics during the first couple of days following your procedure. Make sure you take these as needed and directed. For example, take your medication with 8 ounces of fluid if the instructions advise you to.

Whether you want to take prescription analgesics or not, you must take a full course of antibiotics as directed. If you have any questions about the medications you have been prescribed, please let us know. We are happy to answer all of your questions.

Diet

During the first 24 hours post-op, you should move as little as possible. Ideally, your diet will consist of foods that require minimal preparation. Yogurt, unsalted nuts and fresh produce are great options because they are high in micronutrients and energy. If you don’t like the idea of grazing instead of eating a meal, prepare meals before your procedure that keep well in the refrigerator or freezer. Alternatively, have a loved one cooked for you while you rest.

Furthermore, it is very important to stay hydrated throughout your recovery process. Make an effort to drink at least half a gallon of water and tea throughout the day. If you are taking prescription analgesics, you may need to increase your fluid consumption. If you want to drink juice, have someone make you homemade juice. Juice available for purchase at the store is highly processed. Sugar can slow your recovery process.

Walking

Walking is a very important part of your recovery process. As soon as your body is feeling up to it, start walking at a slow pace. The idea isn’t to get your heart rate extremely elevated.

The goal is to get your blood flowing so more essential micronutrients are delivered to the abdominal region, speeding up your healing process significantly.

Going Back to Work

Depending on the nature of your occupation, you may need to take between one and two weeks off from work. We will advise you on how much time you should expect to take off from work during your initial consultation based on the scope of the procedure and the type of work you do.

Taking Small Steps

Most people return to driving within a few days of their procedure. However, it is important to understand you may not drive within 24 hours of taking certain prescription analgesics. If you’re not taking prescription analgesics, but you don’t feel up to driving, don’t force your body to do something uncomfortable. The key to a successful, rapid recovery is listening to your body and not pushing it too hard.

We cannot overstate how important rest is to your recovery process. Ease into your old workout routine very slowly after your procedure. Remember, you are encouraged to walk slowly as soon as you are feeling up to it. You may resume anaerobic exercise approximately six weeks after your procedure and aerobic exercise roughly eight weeks post-op.

Tobacco Consumption

Tobacco consumption should be avoided during the six weeks leading up to your procedure because nicotine can affect the procedure. Furthermore, nicotine will slow the recovery process. It is advisable to not consume any tobacco products during the first six weeks following your procedure.

Results

It may take a couple of weeks for you to start seeing the improvements made by this procedure. However, your abdominal muscles will feel tighter as soon as the Tummy Tuck procedure is over. Maintaining proper posture will be easier for you and you will no longer experience back pain caused by weak abdominal muscles.
